NYT Article on HCR

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/04/health/policy/04health.html

I hope we all understand and prepare for two unavoidable consequences of the health care reform bill. First, health insurance premiums will increase sharply. Second, employers will discontinue offering health insurance as en employee benefit.

WSJ- 15 Money Rules Parents Should Teach Their Kids

This a quick, but interesting read on introducing, and teaching children about finances. There are a couple points I really like. (1) Kids should earn money before they spend it. Sounds simple enough, but we might 'extend credit' to our kids too readily. (4) I'd like to think I'll be able to help our kids understand that there are certain things we expect and do not necessarily merit a 'reward'. (8) Although the money is technically 'there' and available, we shouldn't completely deplete our savings. (9) Allow kids to make bad decisions. (11) I like the idea of teaching kids about financial markets and economics. (12) Allowing your kids to make decisions about charitable interests, presupposes your child has, or is learning about, charitable interests. I hope we'll be able to show our children, and inspire in them, an interest in charity- on many levels.

I don't have a pic of Kristen by herself- I'll get one up soon. This is from a trip to NYC last spring.

My little lady Lauren Lucy and my main man Beau Michael. I jacked these pics from Kristen's blog. Kristen has become an amazing photographer.

Gendercide- The War on Baby Girls

I'm not sure how I feel about this story as my first official post. I read this article in The Economist last night and I cannot stop thinking about it. Kristen and I, and many of our friends, have taken tests, visited doctors, fasted, prayed, spent thousands of dollars on infertility treatment and anything else we could to have kids. We were thrilled to have kids- whatever gender.

I'm ashamed and embarrassed that I was ignorant to this. I had heard about China's 'one child rule', but I never took the time to think about what that meant. This story is heartbreaking and, to me, illustrates how evil and desensitized humankind can be. I believe gender is eternal and divine. This article is so sad on so many levels- the aborted and neglected children, the long-term effects on the parents, the long-term effects on society.
